Things can feel overwhelming when you are new to the concept of Affiliate Marketing. It is essential to have a complete breakdown of what is involved. I am going to breakdown this marketing concept, to provide more clarity. This post provides a step by step beginner’s guide to niche affiliate marketing. I aim to answer the following questions:
Before we dig in, I would like to welcome anyone that is just joining this journey. For anyone new to affiliate marketing, I recommend you read my earlier post below. However, I will endeavour to explain things in a way that enables you to follow along.
The easiest way to explain the terminology “niche affiliate marketing,” is to first explain the meaning of affiliate marketing. This will help anyone that is new to the concept to follow along nicely.
1. What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards their affiliates, for each customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. In layman’s terms, an affiliate marketer is someone that receives a reward (financial or otherwise) for bringing customers to a third party business. Affiliate marketers promotes other peoples products to earn a commission. They link a customer to a product and receive a commission from the vendor.
2. How does the process work?
The affiliate marketing process is not complicated. This form of marketing is very popular and cost effective. Vendors create affiliate programs to attract marketers to promote their products. Affiliate marketers partner with suitable vendors via their affiliate program. Vendors provide them with marketing materials such as, URL links and product banners. Affiliates then embark on promotional campaigns via content creation, social media marketing etc. The objective is to link customers to the vendor’s marketplace.
Looking at the illustration above.
A customer (C) with two dollar bills ($) searches for product information online. The customer is linked to affiliate marketer (A) via online research. C reads the content created by A and decides to follow A’s recommendation. C makes a purchase from the vendor’s marketplace (M).
The customer gets the sort after product. C is happy
Vendor (V) receives money from the purchase. V is happy.
A is rewarded by V for the referral. A is happy.
If you shop online, it is very likely that you have been involved in the affiliate marketing process without realising it. Big businesses such as Amazon, Ebay etc offer affiliate program.
3. What is a Market Niche?
A niche in a marketing sense relates to products, services, or interests, that appeal to a specific group of people. Let’s look at a product niche as an example.
Example 1. Niche (Cookware) – Products in category are listed below:
- Pots and Pans
- Food Warmers
- Baking Dishes
- Cooking Accessories
- Bedroom Wardrobes
- Bedside Tables
- Chairs and Stools
- Chest Drawers
From the examples 1 & 2. Cookware and Bedroom Furniture are both niche markets (Market Niche)
4. What is Niche Marketing?
Now that you know what constitutes a niche market. You should deduce that niche marketing simply means concentrating all your marketing efforts, on products and services, that serves the interest of a specific group of people.
5. What is Niche Affiliate Marketing?
Niche Affiliate Marketing is when an affiliate marketer concentrates on marketing products or services, related to a Niche. Looking at niche example 1 above, you can see that an affiliate that focuses on promoting Cookware products is practising Niche Affiliate Marketing.
Niche Affiliate Marketing can also relate to a service or interest. For example, when an affiliate marketer focuses on promoting only products related to a particular sport (golf, tennis basketball, cricket etc).
6. What are the basic key steps to take?
There are 4 essential steps to Niche Affiliate Marketing namely:
Step 1. Choosing a Niche of Interest
Your first step is to choose a profitable niche of your passion or interest. The rationale here is very important and can not be overemphasised. You will understand why as we move along. In regards to profitability. There are several factors that determine niche profitability. Some of the factors that determines profitability are as follows:
- Market Size – Does it have good audience size?
- Content Potential – Are there loads of topics to unpack?
- Market Gaps (knowledge gaps, service gaps, product gaps etc)
- Your Knowledge and Skillsets
There is a correlation between your Knowledge and Profitability. Engaging your audience through content creation requires that you have good knowledge of the niche. Hence the recommendation that you choose a niche of your passion or Interest. You will need to become an expert in this field. This requires research, learning and experience. You will find it easier when you have passionate about it.
Step 2. Creating a Niche Website
Your next step would be to build a website. Your website serves as your communication platform. This is where you engage your audience with valuable information, products and services that relates to them.
In the past building a website was perceived to be a daunting task. Fast forward to 2018, that is no-longer the case. You can set up a website yourself in a few hours. If you have the right resources and guidance.
Six months ago, I did not know anything about building a website. That is the least of my worries at present. I created my first website using SiteRubix. It is a free platform that enables you to easily build a website using WordPress.
Step 3. Attract Visitors
You have to attract visitors to your website. You can achieve this through several marketing strategies. I have listed four below:
- Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
- Social Media Marketing
- Forum Marketing
- Pay Per Click Marketing
These marketing strategies are all effective. However, I must warn you that chasing traffic without valuable content is a waste of time.
Most marketers lose their way because of this oversight. They focus on spending money and driving traffic to a website that offers no value.
For you to be successful, you have to deliver value to your audience. Think about how you can help your niche audience with your recommendations. What information are they searching for? Are there better options available than the ones they are currently aware of? Is there a knowledge gap you can fill? You should provide quality information that enables them make informed decisions.
Being able to engage and offer quality insight requires quality research. You will also need to gain insight your target keyword traffic. I use Jaaxy for my keyword research. It provides me with insight on my niche target keywords and market competition.
Step 4. Earn Money
Finally, we get to have some fun. Monetizing your traffic is what affiliate marketing is all about. It is the reward for your hard-work. You drive commissions through affiliate promotions and advertising. Your audience trusts and respects you. They reward you by following your recommendations. Your earnings grows as your following grows.
Google Adsense is a way to monetise your traffic. It allows publishers in the Google network of content sites, to serve automatic advertisements on your website. This is targeted to your site content and audience. You get paid per click of the ads advertised.
7. Who is it Not suited for?
Affiliate marketing is a lucrative marketing business strategy. However, will not suit everyone. It requires patience and perseverance. You sow to reap later. For instance, going back to the earlier illustration above. The affiliate marketer (A) had already invested time in content creation etc, way before the customer (C) comes into the picture. The content could have been created six – twelve months earlier on that occasion.
Unfortunately, we live in an age where everybody want to get rich quick. We all want it now. Everything is at the push of a button. Get rich in 10 mins YouTube videos. No patience, No perseverance. If you are in this bracket affiliate marketing might not be the answer for you.
8. Who is it suited for?
Affiliate Marketing is best suited for someone with patience and perseverance. The opposite persona to the one discussed earlier. Someone that understands that the concept of “delayed gratification”. This is the major reason why most people fail to achieve success with affiliate marketing. For you to succeed, you need patience and perseverance.
It is best suited to someone that has a passion or interest within a profitable niche. When you are passionate about something. You have increased resilience to pursue it. You enjoy doing the deed. Putting in the work will not be as daunting. Now, imagine if your passion happens to be in sports (mountain climbing, racing, golf, basketball, tennis etc); or product niches (mens clothing, female clothing, cookware, bedroom furniture etc). You see what I mean. This takes us back to the importance of step 1 – (Choosing a niche of your passion or interest).
Affiliate marketing is best suited for a true entrepreneur. Someone that possess the attributes of an entrepreneur. Unsure of what these attributes are, please read my earlier related posts below.
